Chateau Los Boldos 2005

My first wine post!

First of all, i'd like to say that i do not assume to know much about wine so you shouldn't hold too high a hope for this either. However, i do promise i'll be trying much to at least get a feel of the art and obviously, this isn't my first bottle, but it is the first one i'm attempting to write a little about. So do be lenient with me.

Chateau Los Boldos is located in the heart of Chile in the Rapel Valley. Its soil is known to be porous and stony and the winery is relatively young at an age of 17 years since it was reinvigorated by Mr Dominique Massenez in 1990.

I suppose what is important to me is how does its wine taste and so thats what we will go into right here.

Cabernet Sauvignon is obviously an easy choice for many as it is easily one of the more recognizable wine categories around. Having tasted quite i few myself, i would say the difference between Chile's version and the Australian counterpart is that this version is actually milder in terms of spices and acidity.

Smell: By simply taking a whiff of the wine, it is possible to make out traces of black pepper, spice, hay, olives and fresh tobacco flavors. A very pleasant way to start the drink. Although its award winning years are 2002 and 2003 for its CLB tradition labels, i found this not lacking as well.

Taste: The wine went down easily with the initial taste being moderately spicy and sour followed by a fragrant fruity aftertaste that lingers in your mouth for about 15 minutes. The wine is not sweet per se but does not overbear in spices thus making it easily palatable for red meats and as table wine.

Color and Sight: The wine exhibits a deep ruby red color with a thin transparent layer close to the apex. It also has some residue when twirled within its cup which may be due to its relatively young age.

Overall: I rather enjoyed the drink though i don't quite like the fact that rubber corks were used. For its price and availability, i wasn't expecting too much in terms of taste so it was a simple test taste in this case. Its not what i would recommend heartily yet but i'm not too sure what constitutes a really good wine yet. Still, i like fruity aftertastes much more than spicy ones so this was rather good in that respect. Will update more as i learn more. Till next post.
