Having chanced upon a good deal on TigerAirways, i decided on a whim its time for a holiday. This time, i'll be going on my own with my gf. Lightly budgeted and totally green, we set off to a part of Aussie i've never been to before on a flight service i've never tried before and will be driving in a place i've only ever saw online. Well, thats what doing things on a whim is about i suppose and hey, like all Aussie's say: "No worries mate!"
A little note on Tiger Airways:
- There's no food so you'll need to purchase on the plane no less.
- There's also no water so you'll need to purchase that as well. Price guide on this, please refer to http://www.tigerairways.com/.
- The planes are smaller and thus more turbulence can be felt.
- There's no entertainment of any sort so bring lots of books for reading.
- Plane timing is a little weird so you'll either lose one day or gain one day depending on your luck.
Otherwise, its pretty alright if you can tolerate all the above. For me, i take it that any flight that gets me to an fro safely is good enough. A comfortable flight that doesn't get to destination is definitely not an option if you know what i mean.
Arriving in Perth
Anyway, i departed for Perth at 3.50pm and got there at 9.15pm local time. Essentially, there's nothing much else i can do apart from get to the hotel and sleep.
After collecting our baggage, we ventured out finally to find the place totally dark. I do mean dark because unlike Singapore, the streetlights are spread thinly which thus gives it a more menacing feeling then it actually is. The weather is superb at a constant 15-22 degress. Great for me but freezing for my gf.
Getting to the Hotel (Sullivans Hotel)

After dragging what seemed to be a ton of luggage out of the conveyor belt, we proceeded to try to find a cab to town and to our hotel. The bad news is, everything is dark and felt shady while the good news is, a nice, tall asian looking fellow came and helped us into his cab for the ride. Having checked the price of the ride beforehand as well (thanks to Thailand's notorious overcharging cabs), i knew what to expect for the trip and it was AUD 35.
No worries here as well, the cabby was informative and friendly throughout the ride. Helpfully volunteering information that was rather interesting including and i quote: "Perth sucks." Followed by the real helpful ones such as, "not to go out to pubs at night as the people get rather rowdy after too many drinks" and "always buy wine in Perth instead of the countryside because its cheaper in town" and also my personal favorite "there's this excellent place called Oyster Bar in South Perth which serves excellent food."
Either way, we had a nice chat about everything from the local authorities to food to my itinery and even Singapore which he (the cabby) visits at least twice a year. In fact, we were having such a nice chat that i didn't notice we have arrived at the hotel.

The hotel is much smaller then my impressions online. The receptionist however, managed to make us feel welcome and promptly allowed us to check in without much fuss. Our room number was 307 and was not of the balcony category which gave us a better view.
What we did have was a small room with ensuite, a small television set with on demand in house videos, night time mint chocolates and free internet access provided you had a laptop and asked for the password. Although the room was small, it served its purpose very well for the 3 nights we were there.
The bedsheets were clean and so was the toilet. There was warm water which is very important given the weather and our privacy was adhered to pretty well. Minimum noise was heard even though we were pretty close to the main road.
Overall, i liked the hotel pretty much. It had a central location which was excellentt, i could walk to town from the hotel, walk to King's Park and also walk to Swan River or Swan Bell Tower. All these locations were about 15-45 minutes walk away which was excellent. The hotel also had a nice and very helpful reception which is 24 hours and filled with lots of information. There was free parking along the hotel and i never had trouble finding a spot to park my vehicle. In fact, i was rather reluctant to leave when the time came.
Anyway, on the first night, we washed up and plonked down on bed to rest up for the next day. The next day was going to be yet another adventure.
